Heart failure, heart attack and pneumonia patients not usually readmitted for original condition

Medicare patients who are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of being treated for heart failure, pneumonia, or heart attack are usually readmitted for a different reason than they were treated for, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

According to the study, which examined readmission data from  2007 through 2009, only 35% of heart failure patients were readmitted for heart failure, 10% of heart attack patients readmitted for the same reason, and only 22% of pneumonia patients were readmitted for pneumonia.  Age, race, and time from discharge did not impact the results.
