More employers plan to shift health care costs to employees in 2012

As health care costs continue to rise, more large businesses are planning to shift some of the burden to employees, according to a survey by the National Business Group on Health. 

Key findings from the survey of 329 businesses:

  • Employers estimate their health care benefit costs will increase an average of 7.2% in 2012, which is less than it was in 2011, at 7.4%, but it is a sharp increase.
  • 53% of respondents plan to increase the percentage that employees contribute to their premiums.
  • 39% plan to increase in-network deductibles.
  • 25% plan to increase out-of-network deductibles, and 22% plan to increase out-of-pocket maximums.
