Hospitals turning to nurse navigators to coordinate patient care

Hospitals across the country are turning to nurse navigators to help patients understand their diagnosis and medical care, make appointments, provide emotional support, and in some cases, arrange transportation for patients to get to their appointments, according to an article in the Wall Street Journal. 

According to the article, nurse, or patient navigation, is a growing field that benefits both hospitals and patients by improving the coordination of care.  Several studies have shown that navigation services increase participation in cancer screening and adherence to follow-up care.
