Software problem making it difficult for hospitals to submit surgical data

The American Hospital Association has alerted the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services that recent changes to 3M Grouper Software Coding and Reimbursement System are making it difficult to report their fourth-quarter 2010 surgical quality measures for the Medicare hospital quality reporting program, which are due May 15, according to AHA News Now.

The article states that the software changes reportedly negatively impact hospitals' ability to correctly identify the appropriate patient populations for their surgical quality measures.  3M has issued a software update to correct the problem.  CMS is currently working with the AHA on the best way to submit the surgical quality data.
