Carilion Clinic partners with Aetna as a step in ACO development

Carilion Clinic in Virgina is partnering with insurance company Aetna to develop an Accountable Care Organization aimed at rewarding providers for producing better patient health outcomes while lowering costs, according to the Roanoke Times.

The article states that the two organizations intend to work together to develop several new insurance plans which include three co-branded commercial insurance plans and a managed care plan for Medicaid recipients.  Both Carilion and Aetna are thought to benefit from the partnership – Carilion will integrate  its health care delivery system with the payment system and Aetna will increase market share.

Similar partnerships have been developing across the nation as a step in the process of developing Accountable Care Organizations.
