CPOE systems can miss 50% of medication errors

Computer physician order entry (CPOE) systems can miss half of routine medication order errors, one third of which are potentially fatal, according to the Leapfrog Group.

The Leapfrog Group study examined the CPOE systems of 214 hospitals using a web-based simulation tool to see how often CPOE caught common medication errors.

Based on the results of the study, The Leapfrog Group is calling on the federal government to ensure that the definition of "meaningful use" require that CPOE systems be monitored on a regular basis.
