New technology to predict central-line infections being tested

The CDC is teaming up with Premier healthcare alliance to test new technologies for predicting central-line associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs), and to automate the reporting of these infections to the CDC.

According to Yahoo News, the technology being tested will analyze the specific traits of positive blood cultures across a subset of Premier’s more than 2,300 member hospitals to develop an automated electronic surveillance tool that could be used to accurately predict the presence of central-line infections.  If it works, the tool could be used to automatically flag probable central-infections for infection preventionist confirmation and corrective actions to prevent additional infections.
