American Medical Association warns against online physician rating tools

The American Medical Association warns that online physician rating tools can hurt a physician’s reputation, according to an article in the Chicago Tribune.

According to the article, there are currently more than 30 different online physician rating services available, including Angie’s list, Healthgrades.com, and a new rating tool by Blue Cross Blue Shield and Zagat survey. Critics argue that most of these sites have too few reviews per doctor to offer statistically significant information.

Some of these sites encourage physicians to read the reviews and comment if they do not agree with the comments.  However, most physicians say that they do not have the time to monitor all of the sites and reviews out there.
