Eighteen percent of hospital admissions result in safety-related incident

Eighteen percent of hospital admissions result in safety-related incident to the patient, according to a study in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study, which examined six years of data from hospitals in North Carolina, found that the safety related incidents ranged from minor injuries to life threatening mistakes, and 14 incidents resulted in death.

North Carolina, already considered a leader in patient safety improvement efforts, has increased its efforts to reduce medical injuries since the study ended.
