The IHI has released a white paper, "Respectful Management of Serious Clinical Adverse Events" to help hospitals prepare to respond to serious clinical adverse events, according to an article in HealthLeaders Media.
The white paper notes that organizations must respond to adverse events in a timely and effective manner or they may face:
- Loss of trust
- Absence of healing
- No learning and improvement
- The sending of mixed messages about what is really important to the organization.
- Increased likelihood for regulatory action or lawsuits
- Increased likelihood of challenges by the media.
The paper addresses preparing a communications strategy for both patient and family as well as front-line staff and the organization as a whole.
