Crew Resource Management safety strategies shown to improve patient safety, empower staff

A recent study concluded that crew resource management programs can influence personal behaviors and empowerment, while the effects may take years to be ingrained into the culture.

According to the Archives of Surgery study, CRM interventions—including preoperative checklists and adverse event reporting—can be adapted to hospitals and improve patient safety.  Further, staff at two large teaching hospitals were not only more likely to adopt the strategies after participating in CRM training sessions, but also felt more empowered to address safety issues, according to a new study published in the Archives of Surgery.
