The subtlety of pay for performance in real life: A Doctor’s Story


An opinion piece in last week’s New York Times highlights the pitfalls of even the best designed, validated and supported pay for performance quality measure. Dr. Sandeep Jauhar wrote an essay in the Times on one of the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) measures to provide antibiotics in the Emergency Department and the downsides to ‘hard coded’ health care processes that produce unintended and in some cases---harmful---consequences.
